Cheap Web Hosting in Canada (2026): What $3/Month Actually Buys

Google’s own overview for “cheap web hosting Canada” now leads with the right warning: intro rates from about C$2.95, prepaid for years, then a renewal that does not resemble the homepage. This is a buyer’s guide written by a BC host that migrates sites off those plans — so the comparison is renewal price, currency, backups, and whether the server is actually in Canada, not who paid for the affiliate slot.

The two prices on every cheap plan

Every serious Canadian result for this query now says the same thing, because customers got burned enough times that it leaked into the AI overview: the banner price is an acquisition discount. You prepay one to three years. The list rate — the one that bills when the promo ends — is the real cost of staying.

If you cannot find the renewal on the checkout page, assume it is two to three times the banner and walk away until they show it.

That is the difference between this article and a “best of” listicle. We already compared WordPress-specific hosts in best WordPress hosting in Canada and the local market in our Metro Vancouver provider comparison. Here the job is narrower: what “cheap web hosting Canada” actually costs over three years, and when that cheap plan is the correct buy.

The comparison at a glance

Prices below are advertised entry points as of September 2026, before tax unless noted. Intro prices assume the longest prepaid term the host is pushing. Renewals are the list rates we see on checkout or in published price-lock fine print — confirm before you pay, because hosts change promos monthly.

Provider Intro from Typical renewal Canadian DC Backups Best for
HostPapa ~C$2.95/mo Jumps to regular CAD rate Yes Check the plan — not always daily Beginners who want a Canadian brand
Web Hosting Canada ~C$3.89/mo Higher after promo (often ~C$10) Yes (both coasts) Included on most plans PIPEDA-conscious national cheap hosting
CanSpace ~C$4.99/mo Price-lock option available Yes (100% Canadian) Nightly backups advertised Buyers who will pay a bit more to freeze the rate
4GoodHosting ~C$2.95/mo (36-mo) Smaller spike than most intros Yes Plan-dependent Lowest prepaid headline
IONOS Canada ~$1 first year Standard rate + tax after year one Not your safest residency bet Add-on territory A landing page you might throw away
Hostinger Aggressive USD/CAD intro Well-known renewal jump No Canadian DC Weekly snapshots typical Hobbies without Canadian-data needs
OVHcloud From ~C$1.34/mo web hosting Closer to list; less theatre Yes (Beauharnois, QC) Paid or limited on cheap tiers People who already live in the OVH universe
Metro Vancouver IT (us) $5/mo, tax included Same $5 — no intro Yes Daily off-site, included BC businesses that want a human and a flat CAD invoice

Four checks before you believe the price

Four checks for cheap Canadian hosting: renewal price, CAD versus USD billing, included backups, and data residency.
A C$2.95 plan that bills in USD, charges for backups, and lives in a US region is not cheaper than a flat C$5 Canadian plan. Do the arithmetic on paper.
  1. Renewal, not intro. Open checkout far enough to see the renew-at price. If it is hidden behind a chat widget, that is the answer.
  2. Currency. A US$3 plan on a Canadian card is not C$3. Add FX, the foreign-transaction fee some cards still charge, and GST/HST/PST. CAD-native billing is the only apples-to-apples number.
  3. Backups in the price. Cheap hosts love selling snapshots back to you. If the restore is a paid SKU, add it before you compare. Then restore something once. A backup you have never tested is a rumour.
  4. Where the bits live. PIPEDA and BC’s PIPA expect you to know (and sometimes disclose) where personal information is stored. A Toronto region on a US cloud is lower latency, not a Canadian company. If the site is a brochure, nobody cares. If it collects customers, start caring.

The usual names, without the affiliate script

HostPapa

Ontario-born, Canadian data centres, beginner-friendly panel, 30-day money-back. The C$2.95 intro is real and the renewal is the part people email us about two years later. Fine for a first site if you calendar the renewal and keep your own off-site copy of the files.

Web Hosting Canada

Montreal headquarters, data centres on both coasts, PIPEDA language in the marketing because their customers ask. Intro around C$3.89 is competitive. Support is Canadian-hours competent. We migrate sites onto and off WHC regularly; it is one of the two national cheap hosts we do not automatically talk people out of.

CanSpace

The adult in the cheap room. C$4.99 entry, nightly backups advertised, and a price-lock if you want the year-two invoice to match year one. You pay a few dollars more than the race-to-the-bottom ads. For a small business site that is usually the correct trade.

IONOS, Hostinger, and the $1 ads

These win affiliate listicles because the commission is high and the first-year price is a joke. They are fine for a throwaway landing page. They are a poor place to put a Canadian business mailbox, a membership plugin, or anything you would be sad to rebuild from a week-old snapshot. Hostinger in particular has no Canadian data centre; we covered that pattern in the WordPress comparison.

OVHcloud web hosting

Quebec iron, less marketing theatre, a cheap shared tier that assumes you can read a control panel. If you already have an OVH account for a VPS or dedicated box, keeping a small site there is rational. If you need someone to answer the phone in English at 4 p.m. Pacific, look elsewhere — including the VPS comparison if you have already outgrown shared.

Where we honestly fit

Full disclosure: this is our product. WordPress and shared hosting starts at $5/month CAD, tax included — Starter (5 GB NVMe), Standard at $15 (the one most business sites should buy), Pro at $35. Every plan includes Cloudflare CDN and WAF, SSL, daily off-site backups, monitoring, and a human in British Columbia. There is no 36-month prepaid trap because there is no intro rate to expire.

We are not the cheapest headline in Canada. We are cheaper than most renewals, and cheaper than a cheap host plus the first emergency we are hired to clean up. If you want the absolute floor and you will administer the site yourself, buy CanSpace or WHC and set a calendar reminder. If you want the invoice to stay at the number on the page, that is us.

When cheap hosting is enough (and when it is not)

Decision guide showing when cheap shared hosting is enough and when a business should pay for managed Canadian hosting.
The split is not “amateur vs professional.” It is whether downtime or a missing backup would cost more than the extra $10 a month.

Buy cheap when the site is a brochure, traffic is light, you enjoy the dashboard, and an afternoon of downtime is an annoyance rather than a lost booking day. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you buy. Keep your own copy of the files and database — not only the host’s snapshot.

Pay for a grown-up host when the site takes payments or appointments, stores client or patient information, or belongs to a business where nobody has been nominated to click Update for a year. That is also when a maintenance plan matters more than shaving two dollars off hosting. Cheap hosting plus an abandoned plugin list is how we get emergency repair calls.

A boring three-year cost example

Take a C$2.95 intro on a 36-month term: you prepay about C$106. That looks unbeatable. At renewal, a C$12 list rate is C$144/year, or C$432 over the next three years — plus the backup add-on you forgot, plus the day you pay someone $90/hour because the cheap support queue is a forum. A flat $5–$15 Canadian plan with backups included is often less money over the same horizon, and you were never surprised.

If you are choosing hosting as part of a new site build, the hosting line is the small number. The build is the large one — see website development costs in Canada. Do not save $80/year on hosting and then skip redirects on a redesign.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest web hosting in Canada?

On advertised intros, 4GoodHosting and HostPapa still show around C$2.95/month on a long prepaid term. The cheapest honest hosting is the lowest renewal that still includes backups and a Canadian data centre — often CanSpace or WHC after you read the fine print, or a flat-rate host with no intro at all.

How much does it cost to host a website in Canada?

Shared hosting: about C$5–$15/month in real (renewal or flat) money for a small business site. A VPS starts around C$19/month on our self-managed line and less on US clouds after you convert currency. Dedicated servers are a different article and a different budget.

Is cheap Canadian hosting good enough for a small business?

Yes for a brochure. No for anything that takes cards, stores personal information, or cannot survive a weekend of downtime. The host matters less than whether updates and backups actually happen.

Does cheap hosting include a free domain?

Often in the first year, almost never at renewal. Budget the domain as its own C$15–$25/year line so the “free” year does not become a surprise transfer later.

Should I use a US host if it is cheaper?

For a personal blog, sure. For a Canadian business collecting personal information, prefer a Canadian data centre and CAD billing. A US company with a Toronto region is not the same as a Canadian provider on Canadian soil.

Can you migrate me off a cheap host without downtime?

Yes. We copy files and the database, test on the new server, then flip DNS. Migration is included with a new plan. The risky part is discovering the old “backups” were incomplete — we verify that before we start.

Want cheap hosting whose price does not expire?

Canadian servers, Cloudflare WAF, daily off-site backups, and a flat CAD price from $5/month with tax already in. We migrate you off the intro-rate host so you never meet their renewal.
